Observations from the Mountaintop

Are you ready to answer the questions raised in this post?

What’s not to like about the view from the mountaintop, especially on a nice clear day? It’s also incredibly peaceful up there. The hustle and bustle of the valley below seems a world away. Yet we spend so much of our time in the valley. It’s where we work and live. Mountaintops are good for reflection and perspective. And that’s what I’m thinking about today. All too often we get caught up in living in the day-to-day, so much so that we miss things that are important. Maybe even critically important.

Every day we face risks we’re aware of, but dismiss. Why do we dismiss them? And what allows us to do that with a bit less fear? More often than not it’s because we’ve transferred a bit of the risk from a financial perspective to an insurance company. We drive our cars, knowing that while the risk isn’t completely gone, we’ve protected ourselves and others with automobile insurance. If we’re homeowners, we have insurance for that, and if we’re business owners, we have insurance to protect the business.

With all of that insurance, it’s no wonder that we’re tired of talking about insurance. Here’s the thing though. All of that insurance we purchase, hoping we never have to use any of it. Yet, there is another category of insurance event that is guaranteed to happen. In fact if you’re reading this right now, it’s happening right now! It’s called life insurance. Unfortunately, life insurance has been so connected with death, that we’ve come to think of it as death insurance. And who wants death insurance?

A properly designed mix of life insurance products really does become life insurance. And oh, by the way, it has a death benefit that lets you take care of the family you care about by providing tax free benefits to them.

If you’ve been putting off doing anything about life insurance, in part because you don’t see the present benefits, then we need to talk. If you’ve worked hard, and don’t want to put off retirement until the government says you can retire, then we need to talk. If you’re looking for ways to diversify your assets, we need to talk about one of the best assets there is.

Bottom line, the view from the mountaintop is breathtaking. The lesson is that we need to remember the long term objectives of our lives. We gain perspective from the mountaintop that we need to remember when we get to work in the valley.
